The Vinayaka Mission’s Sankarachariyar Dental College, Salem was instituted in the year 1986 as an affiliated institution under the University of Madras and later on affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai with three courses viz., Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Diploma in Dental Mechanic and Diploma in Dental Hygienist and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS).
The Vinayaka Mission’s Sankarachariyar Dental College later on became the constituent of VINAYAKA MISSION'S RESEARCH FOUNDATION [DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY] from 2006. The institution is located on NH 47, Sankari Main Road, Ariyanoor,Salem-636008 in 10.14 acre campus with a build up area of 1,14,149 sq. ft.
The institution has committed to impart quality dental education to the students from different socio economic back grounds. The institution offers under graduate programme, 8 post graduate programmes, Diploma courses in Dental Mechanic and Dental Hygienist .The campus has a well equipped library with internet facility for the staff and students.

Prof. Dr. J. Baby John, completed his BDS & MDS from Bapuji Dental College, Davengere, in the year 1992. His experience in the dental profession over the last 25 years is vast and varied where he has been a Teacher, Advisor, Director and Principal. He hails from a family of Dentists and has seen the transformation of dentistry from the early days to its recent form as that of the developed country. He plays an active role in the activities of the Indian Dental Association and has served in various capacities both in the State and Central level. He has been credited with various State and National Awards. He has been awarded the Star Pedodontist Award by Indian Pediatric Dental Society. He has many National and International publications in peer reviewed and indexed journal. He is currently the Vice President of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry. He is a peer reviewer and is in the Editorial Board of various indexed journals. He has been a speaker at various National and International forums. His strength is his ability to multitask and take challenges in his stride.
